We all have heard the data on how girls are outperforming boys at school and university. In Canada 5 boys drop out for every 3 girls, 2/3 of all special ed students are male and men are 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. Added to fear of intimacy and the new growth in male social awkwardness and it’s not a good picture. But why does the happen?
According to psychologist Philip Zimbardo, men have an arousal addiction. This, he postulates, is caused by excessive gaming, excessive porn use and excessive Internet use. The brains of men are being digitally rewired for change, novelty and excitement. This is completely at odds with the traditional model of education, which is interactively passive.
But who should care? Everybody, of course. Women, parents, gamers, employers and the wider community. Zimbardo doesn’t have the answers but he challenges this TED audience to…
